Morocco - into the Sahara desert

Next on our list was the desert - miles of nothingness, just us and the dunes. On the way to our first dune field, we crossed several mountain passes, winding roads, and hairpin turns. We found a stunning camp spot sheltered by small hill and decided to take a break, refreshing ourselves for the next day when our tyres would taste the Saharan sand for the first time. MiRinda cooked an amazing dinner, and we spent hours under millions of stars, listening to the wind whispering through the palm leaves.

The next morning, we left the tarmac, deflated our tyres for the corrugations, and made our way into the dunes. Later, we discovered an empty Berber camp - many tourists had canceled their trips due to the recent earthquake. After a nice chat, we accepted an invitation from Ali to stay overnight. Following a delicious dinner -traditional tajine, we asked if we could sleep outside under the stars instead of in the provided hut. “Yes, of course,” was the answer - and it became one of our most memorable nights in the desert: lying in our bed, surrounded by towering sand dunes, with billions of stars overhead.

The next day, we set off for another long sand drive. We wanted to have some fun and practice recovery skills - but first, of course, we had to get stuck!

After an eventful morning, we drove to Oasis Sacre, where we met Omar. We had planned to stop only for tea and a traditional Moroccan salad, but we were so amazed by the stream in the middle of the desert and by Omar’s hospitality that we stayed overnight. Sitting in the dark with Omar, listening to the story of his life while frogs sang in the background, was another meaningful moment that will stay with us forever.

The following morning, we continued our journey through the desert, got caught in a sandstorm, and managed to find our way back to the tarmac - but don’t worry, not for long.
